Bookbug Author Spotlight: Sandra Lousada on Capturing Babies' Faces

Bookbug's Author Spotlight gives you the chance to learn more about the work of authors, publishers and illustrators connected to the Bookbug programme. This week, Sandra Lousada, whose photographs appear in the wonderful This Little Baby, answers some questions about her work. This Little Baby is included in the current Bookbug Baby Bag.

What was the inspiration behind This Little Baby?

Campbell Books were keen to make a fun board book that babies would be stimulated by and respond to. At the time, I was doing a lot of photography work with new babies and young children, so they asked me to work with them.

How did you go about bringing This Little Baby to life?

I loved the challenge of translating the book’s concept into simple photographs that babies would enjoy looking at and making sure we captured a wide variety of expressions. Throughout my career I have enjoyed taking portrait photographs and trying to capture a moment or a feeling.

I hope parents and carers and babies will enjoy this book together as part of their bonding experience

What’s your top tip for sharing This Little Baby with little ones?

This book could help to develop your baby’s vision and focus. We made the pictures black and white because research tells us that newborns see only in black and white and shades of grey. All the photographs are of faces because we know that babies respond particularly well to faces.

What do you hope children and parents and carers will take away from This Little Baby?

I hope that parents and carers and babies will enjoy this book together as part of their bonding experience. You can have lots of fun with the surprise mirror at the end and reading the simple rhyming text aloud is a great way for babies to start to acquire first words.

Tell us about some of the other books have you worked on.

I have worked on lots of books in the same way as I did with This Little Baby; that is, being commissioned to take photographs to a brief or concept. I have covered a wide variety of themes from yoga to London parks. My work has been extremely interesting and I’ve learnt a lot from delving into different subjects.
