Q&A with Danny Scott
What inspired you to write Calum’s New Team?
There are some great football books out there for young readers but not as many as you might think, and very few set in Scotland.
I think it gives kids a confidence boost when they see their own lives represented in books. That’s why I wanted to keep the books very close to day-to-day life at your average primary school. There aren’t any dragons, wizards or aliens but there is loads of football action - and life lessons about friendship, teamwork and the power of self-belief.
And, finally, football. I love playing and watching football. It turns out that writing about it is also great fun.
What was your favourite story as a child?
Don’t read anything into this, but it was Danny, Champion of the World.
When I arrived in this world my dad ran out to the nearest book shop he could find to buy it so my mum could read it in bed at the maternity ward. When you’re growing up, the story of how you arrived in the world is endlessly fascinating and, almost inevitably, I grew to love this book as much as my dad did.
You have two other Scotland Stars F.C. books coming out alongside Calum’s New Team. What can we look forward to in those stories?
It’s exciting to be able to offer three books at once. In fact, all six books in the Scotland Stars F.C. series are now written – books 4 to 6 will come out in mid-August.
The whole series takes place over the course of one dramatic season for Caleytown Primary’s P6 boys’ team. After Calum’s New Team, Calum’s New Boots (book two) sees Calum and his teammates heading to Edinburgh for an invitational tournament where they meet Brandon Cramond, an evil-yet-talented midfield maestro hell-bent on keeping all the glory for himself. Calum’s Big Break (book three) tests Calum and Leo’s friendship when Leo’s place in the team comes under threat from a new kid in the squad.
Plus, each book in the series is packed with over 50 original illustrations from the super-talented illustrator Alice A. Morentorn. I could look at them all day!
