Overview

Bookbug in Orkney (formerly known as Bookstart) began in 1999 and our first babies are now approaching high school age.

Elaine Tennant is the Early Years Bookbug Co-ordinator working to deliver packs to health visitors, leading Bookbug Sessions and working with partner organisations.  We are lucky to have several volunteers who support our Bookbug Sessions where we include songs and rhymes, craft activities and refreshments.  We consider the opportunity to socialise and make friends as an important part of the session and our volunteers help make new families feel welcome.

Bookbug Pack Gifting

The Bookbug Baby and Bookbug Toddler packs are gifted to parents by their health visitors..

The Bookbug Pirate packs are gifted to all three years olds in Nursery settings, with many Nurseries choosing to hold Pirate Parties.

Bookbug’s Library Challenge

Bookbug’s Library Challenge is a free programme run in libraries across Orkney, where children aged birth to four receive stickers and certificates when they visit their local library. Ask for more details at one of our branches – you’re never too young to join!

Bookbug Sessions

Orkney Library runs monthly free Bookbug Sessions (formerly known as Bookstart Rhymetimes) for babies and toddlers and their parents.  Bookbug sessions are also run in local community centres around the islands.  Click here for more information.
