Bookbug Bags are free and full of brilliant books and goodies for you to share with your child. We hope you’ll enjoy exploring and developing a love of reading together at home.
Bags are given to every child in Scotland, from birth to Primary 1. Your child will receive four bags in total: Baby Bag, Toddler Bag, Explorer Bag and the P1 Family Bag. There are also Gaelic versions of each bag available.
You can find out more about what's in each of the bags by clicking below.
How do I get a bag?
The bags are free and you don't have to sign up to the Bookbug programme to receive them. Bags are given out in different ways depending on where you live. Typically, the Bookbug Baby Bag is given out by Health Visitors in your baby’s first year. The Bookbug Toddler Bag is also given out by the Heath Visitor when your child is aged between 1 and 2. The Bookbug Explorer Bag is given out at nursery when your child is 3. (From March 2016, the Bookbug Pirate Bag will be phased out and replaced with the Bookbug Explorer Bag. Your child may receive either the Pirate Bag or the Explorer Bag.)
When your child goes to school, they will receive the Bookbug Primary 1 Family Bag. These are typically given out during Book Week Scotland which takes place in November every year.
If you haven’t received a bag but you think you should have, your local Bookbug Co-ordinator will be able to help. There is a co-ordinator in each local authority to help make sure the Bookbug programme runs smoothly. Your Co-ordinator will be able to give you more information about how bags are given out in your area and help ensure you receive your bag as soon as possible. It's also worth checking with your local library - a number of branches have stock of bags on hand.
How do I contact my Bookbug Co-ordinator?
Take a look at our local contacts page and click on your local authority. At the top of this page, you’ll find a name, email address and telephone number for the Bookbug Co-ordinator in that area. Bookbug Co-ordinators are very happy to help with any questions about bags, Bookbug sessions or the Bookbug programme in general.

How do I find out which local authority I live in?

Can I get Dual Language Books?
Unfortunately, we are currently unable to include dual language books in the Bookbug Bags. However, you can find out more about books for bilingual families here.
How are the books chosen?
The books included in our bags are pitched at the appropriate age range. The books represent the highest quality in publishing for the Early Years with appealing illustrations and excellent use of language, rhythm, rhyme or repetition.
