Movement and Music
Songs and rhymes are an important part of children’s learning and development.
* The ability to keep a steady beat is a strong predictor of language skills
* Songs and rhymes give children the opportunity to feel the beat through movement
* Beat keeping helps us to identify cadence and rhythm of language. It also involves the vestibular system which contributes to movement and links with hearing and spatial awareness.
* Movement and rhythm stimulates the frontal lobe which play an important part in language development but also in emotional regulation
Infants are more engaged by singing than by speech. Infants find maternal singing very comforting as well as enjoyable (Nakata & Trehub, 2004).
