Short Story Collections Learning Resources
These short story collections open the door to three very different worlds. George MacKay Brown's collection A Time to Keep is an unsentimental portrait of the harshness of island life, where crofters and fishermen accept the hardships of their lives with strength and pragmatism. Iain Crichton Smith's stories reveal characters struggling to make sense of life, some of whom are caught up in the senselessness of war, others who are simply unable to live their lives in an authentic way. Anne Donovan's stories are often about the self discovery and revelations that come to us during childhood, and pupils will see themselves in the fumbling steps of her young characters.
