School Event with Joseph Coelho
In February 2018, Scottish Book Trust took inspirational poet Joseph Coelho to Dalry and Castleview primary schools in Edinburgh for an exciting day of school events!
Joseph is a performance poet and playwright who is "a fresh new voice in children’s poetry". He works tirelessly to dispel the view that poetry is "boring" with his fun and exciting poetry. In 2015, Joseph won the Centre for Literacy in Primary Poetry Award (CLiPPA) for his solo poetry collection Werewolf Club Rules! which explores family life and childhood experiences. Joseph's latest collection Overheard in a Tower Block was published in 2017 and addresses challenging topcis including loneliness and bullying.
In this exciting interactive event, Joseph explored the inspiration behind his writing and give insights into the personal stories in his latest collection. He then showed pupils how to engage with different poetic forms and devices including personification, metaphor, simile and alliteration through a series of fun and easy to remember exercises. Joseph's incredibly theatrical performances were hugely entertaining and his aim is to remove the mystery around poetry and make it as fun and exciting as possible certainly succeeded, with both schools totally immersed in Joseph's poetry and in creating their own poems!
Learning resources full of cross-curricular activities to help your pupils explore Joseph's poetry will be available to download soon.
