School Event with Laura Bates
We are excited to be taking author and activist Laura Bates to visit S1 – 6 pupils in Fife for a special day of events in March!
Laura Bates, author of the Sunday Times bestseller Girl Up, as well as Everyday Sexism, Misogynation and founder of the Everyday Sexism Project, works with businesses, schools and other organisations around the world to tackle gender inequality.
In 2019 Laura is releasing her first YA book, The Burning, a story that tells the tale of a young girl called Anna who has moved to a small Scottish village to escape her past. Anna thinks she has left "the incident" behind, but it isn't long before the whispers are back. A history project about a girl called Maggie, accused of witchcraft hundreds of years ago becomes the perfect distraction. Laura feels the story shows the way women and girls have always been treated and how they are continued to be treated today. The novel will open up conversations about sexism in schools, in particular looking at areas such as sexting and issues surrounding uniforms.
During the event, Laura will discuss her work with schools and young people to help tackle sexism and her inspiration for The Burning. This jam packed event will also look at the many ways to fight back, challenge and change inequality.
This is a great opportunity for your pupils to meet a world renowned activist in sexism and prolific author and gain a special understanding of her work.
These events are FULLY FUNDED and all secondary schools in Fife are invited to apply.
