Book Week Scotland Road Show with Melvin Burgess
To celebrate Book Week Scotland 2015 Scottish Book Trust brought Melvin Burgess to schools across Scotland!
Melvin Burgess is one of the best contemporary authors of young adult fiction; a reputation built upon his controversial, uncompromising and multi award-winning novels. From Junk to Doing It to Bloodtide Melvin writes with a voice that teenagers recognise and respond to. He honestly portrays sex, drugs culture, family break-down and other social issues as well as borrowing imagery and style from films, gaming, music and TV.
The aim of the Book Week Scotland Road Show 2015 was to engage older teenagers who do not see themselves as readers, inspiring reluctant readers to pick up a book for pleasure, not just for exams. Melvin talked frankly and openly with pupils about his books and the stories behind them. His sessions were hilarious, thought-provoking and left pupils excited to read more. As one pupil put it; 'It was a complete belter of an afternoon! 10 out of 10'.
Successful schools were supported with resources, book lists and recommendations of films, games, music and TV programmes along similar themes to hook young people into reading and support a wider culture of reading for pleasure within the school.
