Book Week Scotland Tour with Deanna Rodger
During Book Week Scotland 2017, Scottish Book Trust will be taking the talented spoken word artist Deanna Rodger on a national tour to Aberdeen City, Dundee, Stirling, East Renfrewshire and Dumfries and Galloway for a week of engaging and innovative events!
Deanna is a performer, writer and spoken word facilitator living in London. Deanna works to increase awareness of performance poetry around the UK, and co-curates two spoken word events: Chill Pill and Come Rhyme with Me. She currently writes for the Young Vic in London and was named one of the ‘30 Most Inspirational Women Under 30’ by ELLE Magazine in 2015. She also teaches a Writing Poetry for Performance module with Benjamin Zephaniah at Brunel University, London
Deanna's poety reflects and comments on contemporary life, politics and society. She believes in poetry as a tool for social engagement and activism, and using poetry to create spaces where people are able to speak about the impact of social and political changes on their lives. Her debut poetry collection I Did It Too was published in 2017, and contains poems written over the past decade of her life. The collection explore personal experiences, politics and the urban environment.
In this exciting event, Deanna will perform her poetry for your group, showing them how poetry can be exciting, engaging and relevent. She will explore language and encourage discussion as a group on the impact words can have on our emotions, depending on how and where they are used. Your pupils will then choose a word, and consider how to perform it. They will work in small groups to present their poems to their peers. The aim of the workshop is for pupils to be engaged in spoken word poetry and to realise that poetry can be relevant to their lives and experiences.
