Voting as a Parent or Guardian

The Bookbug Picture Book Prize is a project delivered by Scottish Book Trust celebrating the very best Scottish picture books and encouraging reading for pleasure in homes, nurseries, primary schools and libraries across the country. The winning picture book is voted for entirely by children across Scotland.

This year, we are delighted to open up online voting to parents and guardians who would like their children to be involved in this exciting vote to determine the winning book.

Key Dates

9 August 2017: Shortlist announced

8 December 2017: Voting deadline

15 January 2018: Winner announced

Can I take part?

Voting is open to all children living in Scotland who have read the three picture books on the shortlist.

If you have a child in Primary 1, you will receive the shortlisted books as part of the Bookbug Primary 1 Family Bag.

If you do not have a child in Primary 1, you can read the books by buying them from your favourite bookseller, borrowing them from your local library, or watching our author videos, which feature full readings of all three shortlisted books. The author videos also contain some fun activity ideas to do after you have enjoyed each book, so watch out for those!

If you know that your child is voting at school or nursery, please do not cast their vote online, as this will result in duplication.

If your child has additional support needs, you may wish to use the symbol sheets created by CALL Scotland to help them discuss the book and vote for their favourite. You can find these here.

Time to vote

Once your child or children have read the books and decided which one is their favourite, you are ready to cast their votes!

All votes must be cast by the voting deadline: 5pm on Friday 8 December 2017.

Please note, each child can vote for one book. Each parent or guardian can vote on behalf of up to 6 children in their care. If you require more votes than this, or have questions about the voting process, please contact

If you cast your votes online by the deadline, you will be emailed a link to our announcement video featuring the winning author on 15 January 2018!
