The Bookbug Picture Book Prize, First Minister's Reading Challenge and The Scottish Teenage Book Prize

The Scottish Children’s Book Awards are changing! On 3 March 2016 the Scottish Government announced an exciting new reading initiative for P4-7, to be delivered by Scottish Book Trust in partnership with the Government. The First Minister’s Reading Challenge, planned for launch in August, will encourage pupils in P4-7 classes across Scotland to read for pleasure.

To allow schools to embrace the first year of this new project fully, we have made changes to the Scottish Children’s Book Awards. This year the awards will be replaced by two new prizes, The Bookbug Picture Book Prize and The Scottish Teenage Book Prize. Scottish Book Trust will no longer run a book award for 8-11 fiction - this age group is now covered by The First Minister’s Reading Challenge.

We very much hope you’ll take part in one of these projects with your pupils in the new academic year as part of the work you do to encourage a reading culture in your school and a love of reading for pleasure throughout your school community! Here are the things you need to know…

The Bookbug Picture Book Prize for Nursery to Primary 3

Changes from previous years:

  • Earlier voting deadline to reduce the time pupils wait to find out the winning author
  • A focus on CfE-linked classroom activities and author videos, no longer a book review competition or book trailer competition

  • The winning author will be announced online with a special author video

The First Minister’s Reading Challenge for Primary 4-7

  • Schools can register to receive free pupil reading journals
  • New website with support materials and a list of recommended titles to give inspiration for starting your reading journey will be unveiled in August
  • No voting deadline – this is not a book award!
  • 300 recommended titles to start your reading journey available as a printed booklet and online
  • A range of prizes will be awarded next summer to pupils and schools

The Scottish Teenage Book Prize for S1-6

Changes from previous years:
