I increasingly resent the claims on my (limited) time and energies made by ‘big books’, especially the big great American novel. The word processor has encouraged prolixity, and more and more I love books that have the decency to come in short and sweet. Here’s a list of faves, in no order - you can use the time and energy saved by not reading this year’s big novel to read all or any of these twice.
