After the Raj

10 books set in modern-day India

India is a remarkable place, with a rich culture and history, but also a great deal of disparity between the haves and the have-nots. In the mid-20th century, India finally managed to shake off the last vestiges of colonial rule and began reinventing itself as a world power. It became one of the world's fastest growing economies and its films and music began to spread across the globe, but tensions between the country and its neighbours, as well as internal conflict between the rich and poor continued to trouble the fledgling superpower. With so much drama to mine, is it any wonder authors love setting their books in India?
