Reading Hero Sue Carr

Sue Carr, a retired teacher from Prestonpans Infant School in East Lothian, has been chosen as one of Book Week Scotland’s Reading Heroes, nominated in the Most Inspiring Reader category for her long-standing dedication as a teacher to encourage children in their enjoyment of reading.

Sue was nominated by parent Donna Duff, whose two children were taught by her at Prestonpans Infant School. Over the course of her 36 year career, Sue dedicated herself to encouraging a love of books in the 900 pupils that she encountered. Methods she used to do this included recommending books to children at a level they felt comfortable with, and listening carefully to their likes and dislikes. She used books from a diverse range of topics, and even gave away some of her own collection as prizes to the most enthusiastic readers. Her approach did not focus on a child’s ability, but on exploring what they might enjoy, as she believes that forcing a child to read only discourages them in the long run.
