That sense of trespassing upon other women’s worktops. Shining, shut for the day, the kitchen glowers at me. We do it anyway – two Scots women on a mission. Small dots, big map.

Today I feel eluded by everything; the whereabouts of wooden spoons, pots and pans, shops and words. We’re learning Shona and most of the family speak English as well. Yet an old shyness sits on my skin. I shove the words out: “It’s for the wedding, tablet is traditional in our country.” Bemused eyes, polite smiles. Just wait till they taste it!
