Gaelic New Writers Awards 2017: Marion Morrison

Poetry

Chan eil Marion ach air tòiseachadh air a bàrdachd a sgaoileadh a‑mach gu poblach. Bha a’ bhàrdachd aice air a taghadh dà thuras airson an duanaire New Writing Scotland, agus tha i air a bàrdachd a leughadh aig buidhnean‑obrachCeòlas ann an Uibhist agus aig cèilidhean bàrdachd anns a’ choimhearsnachd.

Marion has only just started letting the general public see her poetry, although her poems have been published twice in the New Writing Scotland anthology. She has read her poetry locally at workshops run by Ceòlas and at poetry evenings in the community.

A’ Meòrachadh

Thug thu bàta gu muir

Gus d’ anam a mheòrachadh.

Ann am bruadar ciùin

Beanntan eagalach,

Tràighean farsainn,

Muran a’ seargadh,

Ciaradh an fheasgair

Mar bhriseadh cridhe.

Na ràimh leis a’ cheist

Carson ’s càite?

Na h-eòin a’ sgiathalaich

Cearcaill gun fheum.

Sgòthan mar sgiathan

San iarmailt

A’ maoidheadh

Air cuimhneachain mhì-rianail

Mun cuairt tràighean seargach

Ann an sguabadh nan stuaghannan

’S lùbadh na talmhainn

Gach rud air a leigheas.

Togaibh ur cridhe

Fuasgladh air gach nì

Ach an dorchadas fhèin

A’ caoineadh ’s a’ caoineadh

Gu socair, gun tàmh.

On Reflection

You take a boat to sea

To reason with your troubled design

On the calm frame of the water

Peace in your vision:

The smouldering hills

Formidable sands

Marsh grass withering,

The sun a wilting heart.

The oars enquiring where and why?

Mad cry of the birds in aimless orbits.

Shields of clouds treading on the day.

Misting capricious memory

Mastering the white worn strand.

And all that waited solving is resolved

In the spreading of a wave

In the tilt and tumble of the land.

Cheer to the heavens.

Nothing comes amiss:

But the gnawing of the slow night.

Marion says:

"Gus an do leig mi seachad mo dhreuchd mar neach-teagaisg cha robh mi a’ faighinn an cothrom mòran sgrìobhaidh a dhèanamh. Co-dhiù, cha robh mi gam fhaicinn fhèin mar sgrìobhadair dòigheil, b’ e dìreach cur‑seachad a bh’ ann dhòmhsa. Tha mi fìor thoilichte an duais fhaighinn. Bheir e dhomh an cothrom barrachd sgrìobhaidh a dhèanamh agus a bhith am measg luchd‑sgrìobhaidh."

"Until I retired as a teacher I did not get much opportunity to do any writing of my own. In any case, I did not see myself as a proper writer – for me, it was just a hobby. I am, therefore, really delighted with the award. It will give me the incentive to do more writing and to be among other like-minded people who write professionally."
