Panel Says...

Fiction and Narrative Non-Fiction

Panel: Amy Liptrot, Ken MacLeod and Amina Shah

The range and quality of the writing submitted for the awards was impressive and made for a very difficult decision process for the judges. I am confident that we have uncovered some of the most exciting new voices in Scottish writing. - Amina Shah

Poetry

Panel: Anna Crowe, Don Paterson and JL Williams

Though were we were faced with a great variety of styles – from the expert use of traditional form to some highly experimental work – there were no 'committee decisions’: all of the awardees were chosen because of our great enthusiasm for the poems, and every poet had their passionate advocate. The quality of the shortlist was so high, though, I suspect a different day could easily have seen us arrive at different result; not news that will necessarily comfort the shortlisted poets, but something which I hope encourages them to apply again next year. The judging process was an absolute pleasure, and gave us all the opportunity to broaden our own tastes – and left us feeling rather pleased about the health of poetry in Scotland today. - Don Paterson

Children and Young Adult's Fiction

Panel: Pamela Butchart, Philip Caveney and Catriona Wallace
