Sometimes, we all need a chance to break away from our normal routine. A writer’s retreat is the perfect opportunity to spend some concentrated time on your writing in beautiful, inspiring surroundings.
Here are some of the retreats Scotland has to offer.
Moniack Mhor Creative Writing Centre is located in the Scottish Highlands, just fourteen miles from the city of Inverness. Since 1993 Moniack Mhor has been running creative writing courses tutored by some of the finest authors in the UK and beyond. The centre offers a variety of courses and retreats.

Culnaskeath Farm Cottage is perched on a hill overlooking the Cromarty Firth and the Black Isle, about 17 miles north of Inverness. Surrounded by fields and woods, it has two double bedrooms, a wood-burning stove, a new kitchen and bathroom, and a large private garden. The cottage is attached to the home of author Cynthia Rogerson, which makes it ideal for any mentoring or literary feedback. This can be tailor-made to your needs. However, it may be that a solitary time is all that is needed, and we are very good at keeping a low profile.
Glencanisp Lodge, in the North West Scottish Highlands, is host to a programme of residential leisure and learning courses, retreats and workshops throughout the year.

Writers' HQ offer a day-long retreat in Portobello. Spend the day in a room with a bunch of writers, limitless caffeine and no internet. A scoreboard, gold stars, general silliness and supportive competitiveness will help you reach your targets and break you out of your bad habits. These are on the second Sunday of every month (except September - first Sunday).

Heriot Toun Studio is a purpose built eco-friendly live/work space in the Scottish Borders providing living/ workspace under one roof with self-catering accommodation for up to five. The studio is perfect as a temporary place to work on a project or run a workshop, or for anyone looking for a creative break in an inspiring setting.

Supported by Creative Scotland, Scottish Book Trust also offer the Robert Louis Stevenson Fellowship.The fellowship consists of four residencies of one month each at the Hôtel Chevillon International Arts Centre at Grez-sur-Loing in France.
