Young writers (12–18) winner

Anthony Song, 14

Symphonious chirps of tūī reverberate in the frosted morning, gliding, spreading their kaleidoscopic wings. The white icing coating the mānuka trees is complemented by the ethereal dawning sky, painted in hues of fiery orange. The frozen lake— diaphanous, pristine, idyllic— hides the man dressed in black.

Young writers (5–11) winner

Jessie Whitehead, 10

Dancing in shadows, tickling the tip of grass. Moving, still. Slates of blue shiver in the sun. My shoes, caked in ice. I try to capture frost on my camera. The way the light reflects, then crackles away like a butterfly, it's impossible. Frost melts to dew.

The perfect photo.
