Young writers (12–18) winner

Yifeng Yu, age 14

She enters the Museum of Mexico City, her copper skin reflecting sunlight. Her black eyes and hawk-like nose render a sharp expression. She approaches a placard.

“Battle standard, attributed to Hernán Cortés.”

Inaudible voices circulate.

That night, she dreams. Armor glistens over the ruby river as the Nahuatl people scream.

Young writers (5–11) winner

Briar Jarman, age 11

I weave through the museum’s displays, awed by the mythology.

My attention is drawn to tales of a kelpie. A malicious water spirit that took the form of a beautiful woman and lured unsuspecting men into the water. Drowning them. I scoff. Men. Shaping history the way they want it.
