Carly Brown
I am an award-winning performance poet based in Edinburgh, the author of a poetry pamphlet Grown Up Poetry Needs to Leave Me Alone, and of bestselling children's picture book I Love St Andrews. In 2013, I won Scotland's National Championships of Slam Poetry and I've been a featured poet at dozens of locations around the UK and internationally, including Glastonbury Festival and the Edinburgh Fringe.
My poetry is witty and personal, grappling with ideas of home, growing up, feminism, and relationships, and I can theme my performance around a particular topic for your event. Previous themes I've created feature sets around include: literature, love and relationships, and women's history.
I also have extensive experience as a creative writing teacher and hold a Doctorate of Fine Arts in Creative Writing. I have led writing workshops with primary and secondary school children, refugees and asylum seekers, and university students. While my workshops have covered a range of topics, my areas of specialty are historical fiction and performance poetry. For instance, I've led historical fiction workshops for teens with The Young Walter Scott Prize and a poetry workshop series for women with Glasgow Women's Library. (Photo credit: Perry Jonsson)
