Chris Carse Wilson is an author and lifelong runner who uses exercise and nature to manage his mental health. Chris is a passionate advocate for mental health awareness and was diagnosed as autistic at the age of 40.

His debut novel Fray tells the story of a father who runs away to the Scottish Highlands following the death of his wife, chased after by their adult child who fails to find him, instead discovering an abandoned cottage filled with thousands of pieces of paper.

These notes detail the father’s loosening grip on reality, as he believes his wife is somehow not dead, but there in the mountains to be saved. The novel is an intense literary exploration of grief, loss and how our mental health shapes our understanding of – and attachment to – reality.

‘Beautiful, amazing, completely mesmerising. I felt like I was inside the character’s head. Fray is right up there for me with other first-person books like The Catcher in the Rye and Janice Galloway’s The Trick is to Keep Breathing. I couldn’t recommend it more highly.’

Chris lives outside Dundee, where he was part of the team who created V&A Dundee, Scotland’s design museum.
