I write poetry, short stories and children's books - the latter for all age groups from picture books to young adult. I have published six full collections of poetry, the most recent being The Watching Stair (Worple Press). I've written more than 40 books for children. Of these Harvey Angell won a Whitbread Award and The Seeing was shortlisted for a Costa Award.

I've worked as a writer in residence at Dumfries & Galloway Infirmary and as a Royal Literary Fund Fellow at the University of Edinburgh. I've tutored a number of creative writing courses and done many poetry readings and workshops, as well as being co-editor of New Writing Scotland and Assistant Editor of Mariscat Press.

I most like doing poetry readings and workshops for both adults and children. I'm also happy giving talks on writing and visiting schools to do participatory sessions with children. (Photo credit: Gerry Cambridge)
