Jenni Calder's headshot

I have published 28 books on literary and historical subjects, including biographies of Robert Louis Stevenson and Naomi Mitchison and several books on aspects of Scottish history and Scottish emigration, and - as Jenni Daiches - fiction and poetry.

I have edited and contributed to many more, and published in many journals and magazines. My most recent publications are: Borrowed Time (fiction), Essence of Edinburgh: An Eccentric Odyssey and The Burning Glass: The Life of Naomi Mitchison.

I have given talks, lectures and workshops and taken part in conferences and book festivals in the UK, Canada, USA, Italy, Spain and Kenya. For 23 years I was at the National Museum of Scotland where I was successively education officer, publications editor, exhibition scriptwriter and editor, and Head of Museum of Scotland International which focused on Scottish emigration.

I have for many years between an active member of Scottish PEN, president from 2003-07, and engaged in campaigning for freedom of expression, promoting writing and reading, and fostering international understanding.
