My name is Joan and I live in the Scottish Borders with my cats and other family. I write fiction and non-fiction, and I lead university courses in travel writing, narrative non-fiction, and ethnographic writing.

My books have been widely translated, and nominated for major book prizes (even being shortlisted for and winning some!). I’ve taken part in local and international book festivals (An Lanntair, Borders, Boswell, Edinburgh International Book Festival, Wigtown, Children’s Books Parade) and appeared on BBC Radio Scotland, The Week Junior Show, the Plazoom podcast, the National Literacy Trust Virtual Library, and Forever Lands, the 2023 film by Publishing Scotland. I love engaging with schools through the BookPenPal scheme, virtual classroom visits, and in-person workshops.

My two most popular interactive workshops are ‘Tigers are Magic!’ (P4-7) and ‘Speak Out!’ (P6-S2), but I have also snipped ribbons at library openings, dressed up for World Book Day, and given talks to Higher English classes, creative writing clubs, and whole-school assemblies. If you’d like to find out more or invite me to take part in an event or collaboration, please get in touch. I would love to hear from you!
