When I was growing up in Glasgow, I heard family members speaking Gaelic. This motivated me to learn Scottish Gaelic as an adult and to send my own children through Gaelic Medium Education. My learning journey has included distance learning at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig and conversation classes at Lews Castle College. I have contributed articles in Gaelic to the Scottish Gaelic magazine, Cothrom, and also wrote a piece for An Naicheachd Againne, the American Gaelic Society newsletter.

In 2019, I won a Gaelic New Writers Award to develop a children’s novel based on a true story. An Cat Coigreach (The Foreign Feline) won a Gaelic Literature Award in 2022 in the category Best Unpublished Manuscript for Children/Young People. I drew 23 black and white illustrations to accompany the story and An Cat Coigreach was published by Bradan Press in 2024.

I am an active member of the Society for Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) and have experience working with children from early years up to high school level. I can speak about the events which inspired me to write An Cat Coigreach as well as run an activity related to the book and its characters.

I also go by June Ghreumach.
