Justin was a professional writer, editor and publisher for 15 years before his debut novel, Carpet Diem, was published by an independent press. The audiobook by Tantor Media won the 2018 Audie award for Humour before he reclaimed the rights for the book and republished it. His second novel, The Lost War, set in a country based on Edinburgh, won the 2020 SPFBO (Self-published Fantasy Blog-off) award, leading to a four-book deal with Orbit for The Eidyn Saga. In 2023, he recorded the audiobook for The Bitter Crown, book 2 in the series.

Two short animations Justin scripted and produced were shortlisted for Scottish Creative awards, and he also writes TV and film scripts with his wife, Juliet. Their children’s audio story, The Great Bumpkin King, was produced by BBC Scotland in 2019.

Justin has appeared on numerous panels at both online and in person events since 2018, including MCM Comic Con, Cymera, Fantasycon and Bristolcon. He has also become a regular host for events, interviewing authors including Jay Kristoff, Mark Lawrence, Lauren Beukes and Adrian Tchaikovsky.

In 2024, he set up TheWriteAdvice.co.uk with Anna Stephens and Stephen Aryan to offer mentoring and editorial services to writers.
