Mary Paulson-Ellis's headshot

I am the author of The Other Mrs Walker (Times Bestseller and Waterstones Scottish Book of the Year) and The Inheritance of Solomon Farthing. These literary-detective-novels-cum-family-mysteries are set in Edinburgh, where I live, and explore the world of those who die with no next-of-kin.

I regularly do readings and talks about my work, for which I often bring props, including some of the objects that appear in my novels. I've done this for bookshops, festivals, libraries, universities and many book groups. I enjoy the cut and thrust of Q&A. I have also participated in panel events, discussing everything from crime fiction to getting published.

I have an MLitt in Creative Writing from Glasgow University and have taught creative writing to adults and children for organisations including the National Galleries of Scotland and the Edinburgh International Festival. I am a graduate of Scottish Book Trust's Writers in Schools Programme and have also worked as a mentor and script editor.

In 2017, I was shortlisted as a Breakthrough Author in the Books Are My Bag Readers Awards and Highly Commended as a Rising Star in the DIVA Literary Awards. In 2016, I was named an Amazon Rising Star. (Photo credit: Chris Scott)
