I am a journalist, editor and writer, and currently a columnist with The Herald. Previously, I have worked as a reference editor for W& R Chambers and Larousse, and was for many years literary editor of Scotland on Sunday and the Herald and Sunday Herald.

I have written two historical novels, After Flodden and Dacre's War, set in the turbulent 16th century in the Scottish Borders, where I live. Other books include Scotland: The Autobiography: 2000 years of Scottish History By Those Who Saw It Happen and, most recently, Scotland: Her Story: The Story of the Nation by the Women Who Were There. Both of these are eye-witness accounts of history, which are a way of getting behind conventional views of the past, and coming closer to understanding the reality of life in previous centuries, as many people experienced it.
