I am interested in cultural and migration issues, which are reflected in my first and second novels, and some of my essays; these are published under Chiew-Siah Tei.  I have a particular interest in the lives of the ethnic minorities in a multicultural society: interaction, integration, assimilation, cultural conflicts, marginalisation, prejudice and discrimination, etc.

I am also keen on exploring the cathartic elements of writing, on how one can release emotional trauma through writing, as Jean Rhys cites, "I found when I was a child that if I put the hurt into words, it would go." As such, I am currently working on a collection of personal essays based on my own experience.
