Q&A with Jackie Kay

What inspired you to write this story?

I was inspired to write this story because I was fascinated by life's circles: how as a wee girl my mum and dad would help me to sleep with a story and a song, saying Coorie Doon. Then years and years later, it was me helping them to sleep with a song and saying Coorie Doon to them and night, night.  

What’s your favourite way to coorie doon?

To have a mug of sleepy tea and listen to a story.

Which Scots songs did you grow up with?

I grew up with the Isle of Mull, the Skye Boat song, the Red Yo Yo, the Jeely Piece song, the Tiree Love Song, the Wild Mountain Thyme, John Anderson my Jo, Ae Fon Kiss, Ally Bally and so many more, but that's enough to get us going!
