Playlist Poem: Nadine Aisha Jassat
A Playlist Poem by Nadine Aisha Jassat for Book Week Scotland 2021
I wanted to write a playlist poem for those who aren't there yet with Celebration – those who feel alone when others are celebrating, or for whom celebration feels far away. My poem, 'Hope', I wrote as a message to that part of myself, too - a wee conversation between my heart and myself, reminding myself of hope and my own resilience. I'm especially pleased I was able to include songs which make me feel hopeful, too (not all of them - sorry, Hamilton!) but 'Hope', 'Alright', 'Fly Again', and truly anything by Rachel Sermanni.
Hope
My heart tells me: listen.
You can't stop the beat.
Can't stop the lakes.
My love,
Put me in the river.
Hold tight, alright.
Hold tight.
The water is wide.
The water,
in to you:
Ports
Heartbeats
Gold.
Love, be brave.
You know who you are.
You know.
If I swim good,
stay alive,
I will survive.
Breathe easy,
My dearest darling.
When it's time:
Fly
again.
