Hope is Not a Plan!

Author: Margaret Bowman
Year: Hope

My mother used to say to me

'Girl, hope is not a plan';

If you hope for things to happen,

Life will be over, before it’s began.

You have to put some effort in

To make your hopes come true,

Because if you don't, you’ll lose the chance

And your hopes will have gone askew.

There's nothing wrong in dreaming though

About things you want in life,

But dreaming gets you nowhere,

More likely gives you strife.

For hopes and dreams to both come true,

It takes a lot of work,

But anything can be possible

If you plan – and do not shirk.

You need a bit of focus, and know

Exactly what you seek,

You need to know what route to take:

Be direct; in control; never weak.

So here's a bit of sound advice

For all those who are "dreamers":

You must make a plan for what you need

As a "planner" is also a "schemer."

So mother was right in what she said

That 'hope is not a plan',

If you look ahead and plan your way,

Your hopes have now began.

So when it comes to hopes and dreams

Make them happen – Yes you can!

But remember please, mother's maxim,

That hope is not a plan!
