By Maya Abeysuriya
I plough the fields in my
own urban landscape.
Walk the streets of many
before me.
I wander amongst the
many ethnic and
wellbeing shops.
Staring in the windows
of social change
Those who battled for
me
Arrived on ships.
Fought for the women’s
vote.
Threw paraffin-lit
bottles in the council’s
shut windows.
Left a trail for me to
follow
Defiant in its path.
They took no prisoners.
Fought for every cause.
They marched for us.
To include us on the
rainbow
For inclusivity.
A quality of life.
Each day step into Hope
Street.
Walk with me
towards
this meaningful life.
