The Nearly May

Author: Jan Sinclair
Year: Hope

Tis nearly-May around today

Its beauty so astounds me –

No more like heaven do we see

Than heaped-up pleasures of the May

My inner smile, the peace sublime –

Is more than I can say.

My light feet lead me to the park

Where at the gate a message clear

From sweetest blue forget-me-nots

Be mindful what may now appear.

Could I forget the balmy air?

Scent laced with warmth and petals too.

At last, at last – cold April's gone!

And May comes dancing with the dew.

Birds – they know and flowers too!

They are long ahead of me and you.

Sweet violets shine, white garlic blooms

May’s dream of summer's right on cue.

Tall honesty, resplendent as a queen

Holds court until May comes on the scene

At nearly-May excitement rings

When birds and flowers and angels sing.
