Creative writing in Scots
This resource will support creative writing in Scots in class, with ideas for discussion and getting started. It is also useful for those looking to introduce a history of Scots to pupils, or become more familiar with it themselves.
Included is:
- A brief background to the language, with references to sources for wider reading
- Activities to increase knowledge of Scottish speech beyond the local area and boost familiarity with the literature of a wider range of Scots.
The resource is split into two sections:
- Talking, listening and reading in Scots
- Writing in Scots
The activities are not sequential and can be approached as standalone work. However, it may be useful to begin with a discussion about what contemporary Scots language is and how it has developed.
You can submit any work your students create inspired by this resource in our Scots Young Writer o the Year(this link will open in a new window) competition. Closing date for the competition is Wednesday 21 June 2023.
